The former Mlaka oil refinery in Rijeka, in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, is a rare example of a preserved large-scale industrial complex. It is of interest to visitors drawn to technical heritage and the story of how the city became a processing and port centre on the Adriatic.
The plant was built in 1882 as the largest oil-refining facility in Europe, and production lasted until 2008. The Petroleum Harbour has been preserved, the oldest of its kind on the Adriatic, together with varied industrial buildings dating from the end of the 19th century to 1939. Alongside them are power and production plants with equipment and machinery, workshops, laboratories, social and storage rooms, tanks and pipelines, the remains of the villa of Milutin Barač, and landscaped outdoor areas. The ensemble has urban, architectural, technological, historical and documentary value because it allows the whole process of obtaining petroleum products to be shown.
The ensemble is a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-6993.
