Trogir is a town on a strait in the western part of the Kaštela Bay, in Split-Dalmatia County. Visitors come for the town core, in which almost two thousand years of building can be seen on a small island space.
The fate of the town was influenced by its position in the strait. Greek settlers from Issa founded trading settlements on the mainland in the 3rd century BC. At the end of that century and the beginning of the next a settlement with residential blocks and a regular street grid at right angles was built. The Romans added impressive temples and public buildings. In the Middle Ages the town spread to the western part of the islet, where stone Romanesque and Gothic houses sprang up, the main square and streets were paved, and the cathedral was completed. The town rounded off its urban fabric during the period from the 13th to the 16th century.
The ensemble is a cultural property of national significance, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code N-5, and is on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
