Archaeological Site Gornje Krtine, Kaštel Sućurac

Gornje Krtine is an archaeological site in the western part of Kaštel Sućurac, a little north of the Adriatic Highway, in the area of the Town of Kaštela. It is interesting to visitors as an example of a site where chance finds revealed a whole hidden world of the Roman and early Christian periods.

The terrain is covered with stone heaps full of fragments of ancient pottery: amphorae, bricks and large vessels. Everything indicates that a Roman villa rustica stood here. When new houses were built, the foundations of ancient walls were encountered. A Roman altar dedicated to the nymphs and a capital of an altar screen from the 6th century were also found by chance, which hints at an early Christian church. A grave in an amphora was uncovered in the same area. The site is dated between the 2nd and 6th centuries.

The site is a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-3254.
