Northeast of Solin, by the road to Klis, lies Rižinice, one of the most important Old Croatian sites in Split-Dalmatia County. It is interesting to visitors because it links the ancient past of Salona with the beginnings of the Croatian principality and the name of Duke Trpimir.
The site was discovered through the chance find of part of the pediment of an altar screen with an inscription mentioning Trpimir. This find, together with Farlati's information, helped Don Frane Bulić to locate here the monastery mentioned in Trpimir's charter. Excavations were begun in 1895 by the Bihać society. An early Christian church with a wide semicircular apse was uncovered, 16 metres long and 7.4 metres wide, built on the foundations of an ancient rustic villa. Trpimir renovated it in the 9th century and equipped it with an altar screen. Ten Old Croatian oval graves covered with stone slabs were found, and the burials extend from antiquity to the Venetian period. More recent finds have also confirmed monumental remains of ancient architecture.
The site is a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-6116.
