Županje is a village in the municipality of Dobrinj, in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, on the island of Krk. For visitors it is interesting as an example of a traditional settlement in which the way of life of herders and farmers can still be read, with stone houses and dry-stone walls.
The settlement is of the scattered type and consists of three cores that arose in the agricultural landscape. The names of most households point to clans, which speaks of the Slavic, that is Croatian, župa organisation, and the Dobrinj area is regarded as the starting point of settlement. The hamlet of Jecalovo Selo is special. The houses are stone single-storey buildings with a gabled roof of channel tiles, and the farm buildings are built of dry stone and covered with plants. They are distinguished by outside staircases on a vault and by cisterns with stone wellheads from the beginning of the 19th century. The developed building style shows the stonemasonry skill of the people of Krk in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the older houses with a wooden balatura may reach back to the Middle Ages.
The ensemble is a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code RRI-0328-1973.
Data: Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia (Ministry of Culture and Media), Open Licence; coordinates: DGU (centre of the settlement).
