In Biograd na Moru, in Zadar County, one can see the foundations and low walls of the former Church of St John the Evangelist. It is interesting to visitors as a testimony to the time of the Croatian rulers, when the town was an important seat.
The sanctuary was consecrated in 1076 and belonged to a male Benedictine monastery founded in the 11th century by King Petar Krešimir IV. The surviving walls, up to about a metre high, reveal the plan of a three-aisled basilica, 29 metres long and 12.5 metres wide. On the west side was a porch, and on the east three semicircular apses projecting outward. The outer walls were articulated by shallow lesenes, and traces in the apse show that the interior was decorated with frescoes.
A protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-1737.
