Church of St George, Sućuraj

The church of St George stands in Sućuraj, at the eastern end of the island of Hvar. Visitors can see it as a consistent example of historicist architecture in the neo-Romanesque style. The place forms the municipality of Sućuraj in Split-Dalmatia County.

The building came into being at a time when memory of the past was linked with national feeling, which is reflected in its appearance. Beside the church the archaeological remains of an older church from the 13th century are presented. Memorial plaques are built into the church wall, recalling battles with Turkish conquerors led by the clergy. The combination of the new neo-Romanesque building, archaeological remains and plaques makes this cultural good special.

The church is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-6445.
