Franciscan Monastery of St Jerome, Vis

The monastery of St Jerome is located on the small Prirovo peninsula in the town of Vis. It is interesting to visitors because the walls of a Roman theatre are hidden in its cellar, so antiquity and the Renaissance meet in one place.

The Franciscans built the complex at the beginning of the 16th century, directly on the foundations of the ancient theatre. The Roman walls can still be seen today in the cellar and in the foundations of the building. At the eastern edge of the monastery stands the bell tower, and to the south is a church with Renaissance features. In it are Baroque altars, a late Baroque choir stall and an organ.

The monastery is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-7243.
