The castle stands right on the shore of Vela Banda in Komiža, a fishing town. Visitors notice it immediately by the sea, and today it is recognised by the clock tower on top.
It was built in 1585, during the rule of the Hvar count and provveditore Grimani, at the request of the people of Komiža themselves. It is built of ashlar and has a regular square ground plan. On the ground floor is a spacious cistern, and a narrow stone staircase leads to the upper floor and to a terrace with a stone balustrade and a protruding parapet. The interior is covered with vaults with transverse ribs resting on a central column. The Komiža municipality placed its office in the castle in 1879. During alterations in the 19th century windows were opened on the upper floor, a balcony was added, and a clock tower was built on the terrace.
The monument is a protected cultural good and is entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-5822.
