Kozala Cemetery in Rijeka is a cultural and historical complex that is also visited as a memorial park. It is of interest to those who like to walk among greenery and follow the history of the city through its tombs and architecture.
It was founded in 1856 by Luigi de Emilij on a high-quality regulation plan. He also designed a separate part of the Jewish cemetery from 1885 and built the Chapel of St Michael and auxiliary buildings. The cemetery was later extended according to the plan of Venceslao Celligoi from 1886 and 1892, realised from 1895 to 1915. He conceived the central part, the so-called horseshoe, and peripheral parts on different levels. The landscaping of greenery among the tombs makes it an important monument of landscape architecture. The cemetery also contains graves of persons significant for Croatian history, among them Whitehead, Erazmo Barčić and the Meynier family.
The cemetery is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-2725, in the category of memorial heritage.
