The Governor's Palace stands at Muzejski trg 1 in Rijeka, north-west of the Old Town, in a prominent position. For visitors it is of interest as an example of representative construction from the end of the 19th century, with a richly furnished interior.
The building was erected in 1896 for the then governor Lajos Batthyány, to a design by the distinguished Hungarian architect Alajos Hauszmann, who designed a number of royal and state institutions in Budapest. For this building he chose the Neo-Renaissance style. The plan is rectangular, with an emphasised entrance porch and carriage access. Inside is an atrium two storeys high, vaulted by a skylight, around which numerous salons are arranged. The rooms are richly decorated, especially with marble cladding.
The Governor's Palace is a protected cultural property and is entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-99. It is located in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County and belongs to the secular architectural heritage.
