Stobreč lies on the very eastern cape of the Split peninsula. The Greeks from Issa founded the settlement of Epetion here, one of the earliest urban settlements on our coast, and in Roman times, under the name Epetium, it was a considerable port, as confirmed by the Peutinger Map.
The oldest part of the present-day settlement, already visible in the cadastral maps of 1831, developed on a height around the small church of Our Lady of Carmel. It is a compact vernacular settlement in which the houses are almost entirely subordinated to the shape of the terrain. More recent construction has done considerable damage to the original vernacular architecture, but Stobreč is still an important archaeological site: it preserves the remains of Greek, early Christian and medieval building.
The historic core of Stobreč is a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code RST-0636-1972.
