Church and Monastery of St Nicholas, Trogir

In the historic core of Trogir stands the Church and Monastery of St Nicholas, a complex with a rich past that spans almost eight centuries of building. It is of interest to visitors because Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque meet in one place.

The monastery was founded in 1064. It was later extended to include several Romanesque-Gothic houses, the Romanesque Tower of St Nicholas and the Gothic Vitturi Tower. The present church dates from the 15th century, and beneath its pavement the remains of the early medieval small church of St Domnius have been identified. It is a single-nave building with a rectangular plan and a rectangular apse. The bell tower above the sacristy is attributed to the workshop of Tripun Bokanić, which worked in Trogir at the end of the 16th and the beginning of the 17th century. In the middle of the main façade is a Renaissance window, and beneath it a relief by Nikola Firentinac. In the 18th century the interior was decorated with stuccoes by Giuseppe Montiventi and Baroque marble altars by Nikola Grassi. The monastery collection is housed on the ground floor of the monastery.

The Church and Monastery of St Nicholas are a protected cultural property and are entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-3490.
