Klis Fortress, Klis

Klis Fortress rises above the town of the same name in Split-Dalmatia County, on a pass between the mountains Mosor and Kozjak. It is among the best-preserved late medieval and Baroque fortresses, and the crag on which it stands offers a view of the surrounding landscape, which makes it attractive to anyone who loves history and fortified buildings.

Situated on a rock that is hard to reach, the fortress developed from the 14th to the 19th century. It consists of three fortifications, each of which could operate independently, so it is a complex type of fortification. The main entrance is on the west of the first defensive circuit. Inside the second circuit are the Oprah Tower, part of the barracks and a wall with loopholes facing north. At the highest point, inside the third circuit, is the best-defended part: an entrance protected by towers, with a drawbridge and the Malipiero and Bembo bastions. There are weapon stores, quarters for the garrison and the provveditore, the small church of St Vitus and several water cisterns.

Klis Fortress is a protected cultural property and is entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-4206.
