Museum of Arts and Crafts Zagreb

The Museum of Arts and Crafts in Zagreb was founded on February 17, 1880. The establishment of this institution came about at the initiative of the Society of Arts and its then president Izidor Krsnavi. The museum was one of the first institutions of its kind in Europe. Today, the Museum is located in Zagreb's Square of the Republic of Croatia, opposite the building of the Croatian National Theater.

The museum was originally conceived with the intention of creating "a collection of specimens for master craftsmen and artists who need to refine the production of everyday objects." Nevertheless, despite this, the idea becomes more progressive, opening up the syntagm of arts and crafts to the possibility of a wider area of its future activity. The strategy of the Museum has changed over time and is aimed at preserving the traditional values of folk craft. The idea is to create new aesthetic cultures of the civic class, and in 1882 a Craft School was established with the Museum. We now know the school at the time as the School of Applied Arts and Design.

It is interesting to note that the project for the first time in Croatia was designed for the purpose of museums. It was designed by architect Herman Bolle.

The permanent exhibition of the museum was opened to the public in 1995, as conceived by then-director Vladimir Malekovic. The exhibit contains some pieces of material from almost all museum collections.

The material was selected according to the criteria of quality and style representativeness. Nearly 3000 exhibits are spread over approximately 2000 square feet of space.

If you visit the Museum, you can see material from:

collections of furniture

ceramics

bookbinding

painted and gilded skins

On 2 floors, through 14 halls, objects are presented within units designed to chronologically work a sequence that illustrates stylistic periods ranging from Gothic to art deco.

The artworks in the museum space delight our guests. Workshops at the Museum are one special and well-received way of presenting, especially during the holidays when you can watch Christmas decorations and other interesting works created in the workshops.

The Museum of Arts and Crafts often has additional exhibitions, and in addition to the permanent exhibition, it offers visitors thematically done presentations and skills of masters from the museum workshop.
