The Croatian Museum of Natural History is housed in a historic noble palace, and is one of the largest (and richest in exhibitions) museums in Croatia. From 1797 to 1834, the first Zagreb Public Theater, the famous Amadeo Theater, operated in the same palace.

The very beginnings of today's rich fund of the Museum originate from the First Academy in Zagreb, as well as from the rich period of the Croatian National Revival. Initial modest collections have been enriched over time, and particular momentum in collecting objects (minerals, ores, fossils, plants and animals) has continued with the work of prominent Croatian and world-renowned and recognized natural scientists. Special contributions were made by professors at the University of Zagreb and the first learned museums by Spiridion Brusin, Gjura Pilara and Dragutin Gorjanović-Kramberger.

Today, the Museum, as an institution, works to collect, preserve, study and present various natural resources that serve us as an insight into the care of documents related to Croatian natural science. Today's museum collection has over 2 million specimens of various types of minerals, rocks, fossils, prepared plants and animals. The collected exhibits originate from all parts of Croatian territory, as well as from neighboring countries and even from other continents. Today the professional activity of the Museum is defined within its specialist departments: Geological-paleontological, Zoological, Mineralogical-petrographic and Botanical.

In the lobby of the museum are exposed busts and memorial plaques to the deserving founders of the Museum.

The Department of Geology and Paleontology exhibits objects and fossils that testify to the long history and development of the Croatian landscape. There are various collections of fossils from the geological past with more than 300,000 museum objects collected from all over Croatia.

Numerous collections of museums contain and exhibit various natural features (fossils of the Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic), which are several hundred million years old. They are carefully sorted through collections, to give us the basis of events and the dynamics of the evolution of the living world and the space that surrounds us. Here, too, we can point out in particular - two collections that tourists like to look at - and which have been declared a zero category of monumental value. These are the Krapina Diluvius Collection and the Holotype Collection.

The Museum has approximately 1,135,000 specimens of various animals in its collections of the Zoological Section. The collection is divided into collections of vertebrates, birds, bird eggs, amphibians and reptiles, fish, and a special collection of tissues for DNA analysis. Museum visitors like to see the largest collection of invertebrates, which includes a collection of insects, molluscs, marine invertebrates and more.

Today's collection (Botanical Division) contains about 100,000 herbarium specimens of vascular flora, which mostly shows species from Croatia. If you come and visit the Museum, you can see two herbarium: a herbarium of higher plants (vascular flora) collected through field research and the purchased Trinajstic Herbarium.

In addition to all the collections and exhibits, it is worth mentioning the rich library. The library was established in 1868, within the Natural History Department of the former National Museum. The oldest and most valuable material stored in the library dates from the 17th and 18th centuries and still has a museological function.

Since 1992, the Museum has been publishing the journal Natura Croatica, which publishes scientific and professional papers related to natural history research and museum collections in the field of biology and geology. The journal thus facilitates and facilitates the rich exchange of professional literature, and is indexed in many of the world's citation databases.
