Novalja is a town on the island of Pag, in Lika-Senj County, and in its center it is possible to see above-ground remains of the Roman period. For visitors it is interesting as a place that was once the outer harbor of ancient Cissa.
In Roman times Novalja served as the harbor of the town of Cissa. Valuable remains of walls of Roman architecture, columns and ramparts of the harbor castrum have been preserved, and traces of ancient construction can be noticed on some of today's buildings. In the local cemetery remains of an early Christian basilica with late Gothic sarcophagi are visible, so it is believed that an early Christian burial complex was also located there. The sites illustrate the life of the island through the centuries, and belong to the period from the 1st to the 5th century.
The zone is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code RRI 251-1970.
