Since the mid-20th century Makarska has also become a tourist centre, and the lifeblood of tourism in central Dalmatia.
Today it is a town with more than 15,000 inhabitants, and the town includes the settlements of Podbiokovo, Veliko Brdo, Puharići, Kotišina and Makar, from which the name Makarska arose. It can boast a varied tourist offer and the especially recognisable hospitality of its hosts.
The Makarska co-cathedral of St Mark the Evangelist is the second cathedral church of the Archdiocese of Split-Makarska.
It is located in Makarska, at the top of Kačić Square. It was built in the Baroque style, and construction of the building began in 1700 at the initiative of the Bishop of Makarska, Nikola Bijanković. Unfortunately, the cathedral was never fully completed according to the planned designs. In 1756 it was consecrated by the Bishop of Makarska, Stjepan Blašković.
The church's façade faces southwest, and the bell tower can be seen from almost the entire town. Right at the entrance to the co-cathedral, on the right-hand side, is an altar in which the bones of St Clement are kept. He is the patron saint of the town of Makarska and the Diocese of Makarska. The bones of this saint were brought from the Roman catacombs as far back as 1725. On the left-hand side is the altar of the Mother of God, and above it a small altar of Our Lady of the Rosary.
The cathedral also contains a Virgin with Child, painted on wood, with characteristic features of the Byzantine school. The small altar, according to local tradition, was built during the plague of 1815. The second altar on the left-hand side is the altar of the Holy Cross. It depicts Calvary, and the statues are carved in wood at life size.
During the great earthquake that occurred in 1962, the cathedral was significantly damaged. During the renovation of the interior of the church, significant changes were also made. The main altar was moved to the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament, next to the cathedral, where it had originally stood. This most beautiful altar is the work of Venetian masters. After the 1962 earthquake the choir loft was damaged, and in 1970 new organs were acquired, the work of the Slovenian company Jenko.
The rector of the cathedral is the parish priest Monsignor Pavao Banić. The canons of the Collegiate Chapter in Makarska are Monsignor Stanko Vrnoga and Monsignor Stipe Jerković.
