Makarska can boast a beautiful and historically rich Franciscan monastery.
Over more than a century of this monastery's existence, the Franciscans created a library with around 5,000 books, 24 incunabula, and many journals and manuscripts. The monastery also possesses a rich archive of 369 Turkish documents. In front of the monastery stands a church.
In 2002 a monument to the friar-teacher was erected. The monument is the work of the sculptor A. Jurkić.
The Church of St Mary of the Assumption was probably built in 1400. It has been burned and damaged several times, but also repaired. These repairs included new elements, which were often bought as cheaply as possible from island builders, and therefore some have outdated forms.
Over time the old church became too small, and around 1910 construction of a new church began. The church was completed and consecrated in 1940. It is a type of central building with a dome. In the apse is a magnificent mosaic depicting Christ, God's creative wisdom and his gift of his own life to those who accept him. Croatian saints, the blessed, and ordinary believers are arranged in a row. The mosaic is the work of the painter Josip Biffel.
