Makarska is one of the most famous tourist destinations on the Croatian coast. It is attractive for both its natural and climatic characteristics, as well as for its rich tourist offer.
The town of Makarska grew up around a natural bay, in which a harbour later developed, protected by the St Peter peninsula and Cape Osejava. Makarska's harbour is the largest, and the only one of its kind, between the mouth of the Cetina and the Neretva.
The place, protected by the peninsula and the cape, is a safe shelter and refuge from bad weather. It was once a haven for seafarers, pirates and merchants, and today it is a refuge for tourist yachts, sailors and excursion boats. This contributed to it becoming an important trading port, especially during the Turkish and Venetian occupations. Today a ferry sails from this harbour several times a day to Sumartin on Brač.
During summer evenings the harbour is full of yachts and tourist excursion boats. Kačić Square in the centre of town is full of young people enjoying entertainment and cultural events. The Makarska riva becomes full of people, is lively, and is a favourite gathering and strolling place. A pleasant evening stroll is enhanced by views of luxury yachts, just as is relaxing on the terrace of some nearby café or restaurant.
In the evening hours the Makarska riva becomes ever livelier. The dynamism of the place takes on its full splendour, picturesquely described by the crowds enjoying a leisurely stroll, or sitting in some café by the riva. Cafés, restaurants and disco bars are popular and filled almost to the last seat. Makarska is a destination for the young, but even those a little older will have a very good time.
A stroll along the riva suits everyone, regardless of age. It is a special feeling to walk there at sunset. The shades of warm colours of the setting sun give a special charm to the promenade and to the boats as they sway on the gentle waves.
The history of Makarska can best be learned about at the Franciscan Monastery. This monastery recently celebrated its 500th anniversary. Within the monastery's premises are kept a picture gallery, a library, the unique Malacological Museum and the Mountain and Sea Institute. On Kačić Square in Makarska stands the Church of St Mark, and on its northern side, in the old school, are the Gojak Gallery, the town library, the music school and Radio Makarska Riviera.
On the shore are also located the Town Museum and the Church of St Philip. In St Peter's Park stands the restored Church of St Peter, from where there is also a magnificent view of the town, the majestic Biokovo mountain, and the open sea.
