The island of Zlarin near Šibenik, in Šibenik-Knin County, keeps the memory of a difficult wartime period. On the northwestern, uninhabited and rocky Cape Marin, about 800 meters from the center of the settlement, a concentration camp operated in 1943.
The Italian occupation authorities established it on 25 March 1943, and people mostly from the area between Drniš, Šibenik and Trogir were brought into it. The camp operated for three months, and the prisoners lived in tents, 15 to 20 in each, in extremely harsh conditions. According to the data, on 30 April 1943 there were 1,645 of them, and at the evacuation on 15 June about 1,200, and all were taken via Rijeka to camps in Italy. The camp was fenced with barbed wire and had guard posts, and it was connected to the settlement by a concrete road that still exists today.
The ensemble is a place of suffering of Croatian civilians in the Second World War. It is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-4247.
Data: Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia (Ministry of Culture and Media), Open Licence; coordinates: DGU (centre of the settlement).
