Supetar is the main settlement on the northern coast of the island of Brač, in Split-Dalmatia County, spread around a wide and indented bay. The waterfront is nicely laid out with a row of two-storey houses, and beneath the modern face lies the story of the first inhabitants who settled by the harbor.
The first settlement arose around the bay called in portu sancti Petri; on the rise on its western side stood the early Christian church of St. Peter, with a vestibule and parts of a mosaic floor. The name of Supetar is first read at the beginning of the 15th century, when there was a castle here to defend the harbor. A more permanent settlement by the sea, with about 60 inhabitants, began to form only in the second half of the 16th century. At the beginning of the 17th century it became a separate parish, split off from Donji Humac. Until 1870 it was the landing place of Nerežišća, where the count and the administration of the island sat; then the center of life moved to the coast, the waterfront was laid out, and the two-storey houses gave it a representative appearance.
The ensemble is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-5722.
