Mithraeum, Banjevci

The Mithraeum near Banjevci in the municipality of Stankovci, in Zadar County, is the remnant of an ancient building dedicated to the worship of the god Mithras. It is interesting as a witness of Roman cults in the Zadar hinterland.

With the building of the road from Banjevci toward Stankovci, a stone mound at the Dražica-Pudarica site was destroyed. Among many ashlars, two parts of a Mithraic relief and three imposts with a cross were found. These parts came from an ancient building, of which, after the clearing of the tumulus, only partly preserved walls at foundation level remained. According to a typological analysis of the relief, the structure arose at the end of the 2nd or beginning of the 3rd century, and was later converted into a Christian church.

The site is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-1309.
