Novigrad is located in a narrow and deep bay of the Novigrad Sea, in Zadar County. Visitors enter the old suburb here with a fortress above it, and the whole place has value because of its harmonious setting.
It was once the center of the district of the same name, which extended from the Karin Sea to the Podgorje Channel. The settlement developed along the bay, but the historic core is considerably narrower, and arose between the church and monastery at the bottom of the bay and the Fortica fortress above them. In the 13th century the fortress was remodeled and named Castrum Novum, from which Novigrad got its name. The church and monastery of St. Catherine were built at the end of the 14th century. The core was built in the time of Venetian administration, from the 15th to the 18th century, as a suburb on the slope below the fortress. Most of the buildings have ambient value.
The ensemble is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-5197.
Data: Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia (Ministry of Culture and Media), Open Licence; coordinates: DGU (centre of the settlement).
