Ethnographic Ensemble of the Bakarac Tuna Nets (Tunere), Bakarac

In Bakarac, in the area of the Town of Kraljevica in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, are the Bakarac tunere, stationary fishing devices for catching tuna. For visitors they are interesting as a rarely surviving fishing tradition in the Kvarner, whose history goes back to the 13th century.

At that time the tunere were one of the strongest economic strongholds of the Duchy of Vinodol and the Lordship of Hreljin. These remained in use longest in the whole Kvarner area, until the 1970s. Because they are made of relatively fragile material, they have been renovated periodically, in 1986 and then in 2007. The renovation preserves the memory of the history and the way of working of this type of fishing device in the Adriatic. The tunere undoubtedly contribute to the visual identity of the landscape.
