Old Croatian Necropolis Kosa, Donje Polje

The Old Croatian necropolis Kosa is located near Donje Polje, in the town of Šibenik. For visitors it is interesting as a cemetery from the beginning of Croatian early medieval history, and the finds from its graves show the taste of the inhabitants of that time.

At the Kosa site 123 graves have been explored. The deceased lay directly on the rock, sometimes hollowed out. The graves were built of irregular stone bound with loam, and were covered by irregular stone slabs. Among the grave goods, various types of earrings stand out. The graves are dated to the 9th and 10th centuries. In the immediate vicinity the remains of two structures were uncovered, which are assumed to date from the same period.

The site is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-4659.
