Between Cavtat and Molunat, about 3.4 nautical miles south of the coast and the Konavle rocks, lies the wreck of the Italian armored cruiser Giuseppe Garibaldi. The site is of interest only to very experienced diving professionals, but it is important to everyone who follows the naval history of the First World War in the Adriatic.
The ship was launched in 1901 and was lost in 1915 in a clash with the Austro-Hungarian navy. It sank in only a few minutes, with 53 people killed and 525 rescued. The local population saw the event from the shore, so the approximate position was recorded, which helped the site to be found in 2008. The wreck lies on its port side at a depth of 104 to 124 meters and is the deepest recorded in the Adriatic. Research so far has confirmed the historical data on the circumstances of the loss.
The wreck is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-7202.
