Urban Ensemble of the Town of Bakar

Bakar is a town on the coast of Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, in which two layers can be seen: the older part on the slope below the medieval castle and the newer Primorje along the sea. For visitors it is interesting as a former important port.

Roman Volcera is confirmed by finds of a necropolis from the 1st and 2nd centuries, on the road from Trsat to Senj. In the Middle Ages development was spurred by a feudal stronghold and a town commune within the Vinodol county, under the Frankopans; Bakar is first mentioned in the Vinodol Law in 1288. Until the construction of the railway toward Rijeka in 1873, the harbor was an important trading and maritime center, toward which the wider Littoral, Gorski Kotar and Lika regions gravitated.

The ensemble is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-5194. In time it covers the period from the 1st to the 18th century.
