The town of Korčula lies on the northern coast of the island of the same name, on a small peninsula facing the Pelješac Channel, in Dubrovnik-Neretva County. It is considered one of the best-preserved medieval urban ensembles in the Adriatic and the Mediterranean, so wandering its small streets is a true pleasure.
Its distinctiveness is the harmony between the outer, sculpturally rich appearance and the inner, almost geometric floor plan, above which rises the magnificent cathedral of St. Mark. The town core was shaped by planning, and from the 13th century, through changes of style and refinements, a valuable body of sacred and secular architecture in Korčula stone has grown. Local masters played a decisive role. The whole heritage displays a blend of tradition and innovation of rare originality.
The ensemble with its immediate surroundings is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-6216. It covers the period from the 13th to the 20th century.
