Archaeological Site on the Island of Majsan

Majsan is an island in the middle of the Pelješac Channel, close to Korčula, in Dubrovnik-Neretva County. For visitors it is interesting as a shrine that attracted believers from antiquity to the early Middle Ages. The site is located in Lučica bay, on the western side of the island.

It consists of an ancient villa rustica from the 2nd century, which in late antiquity was rebuilt and further fortified. One of the central rooms became an early Christian memoria over the grave of St. Maximus, after whom the island is named. Majsan thus became an important religious shrine, and the veneration of the saint continued in the early Middle Ages, when the memoria was reshaped in the style of the South Dalmatian domed type of pre-Romanesque architecture. The site lasts until the 11th century.

A protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-4967.
