At the bottom of the Bay of St. Euphemia in Kampor, on the island of Rab (Primorje-Gorski Kotar County), stands the Franciscan monastery complex of St. Bernardine of Siena, once dedicated to St. Euphemia. It is interesting because, next to the buildings, remains of a fishpond have also been preserved, showing how the monks lived by the sea.
The monastery was donated by the Rab nobleman Petar Car, and construction began in 1446, while the church of St. Bernardine was consecrated in 1466. The complex is organized around a small rectangular cloister with a Renaissance wellhead in the middle. Right on the shore are the remains of a boat shelter and an oil mill. On the shore and in the sea below the walls, traces can be seen of a fishpond in which the monks caught fish, making use of the depth of the bay, the shallow sea, and the tides. The monastery's collections hold works of art from antiquity to the second half of the 20th century.
