Krapanj, near Šibenik in Šibenik-Knin County, is the lowest inhabited islet in the Adriatic, rising only 1.5 meters above the sea. Visitors are drawn by its unusual position and the dense settlement on a small area, beside the Franciscan monastery.
At first only the Franciscan monastery of the Holy Cross stood on the island, and the parish was founded in 1523. The settlement lies on the southeastern side, and the buildings are mostly rural, with a few examples showing more pronounced stylistic features. On the northern side the houses are packed together, and above them rises a clock tower. Two-storey houses predominate, while single-storey ones are rarer, and among them are some Baroque houses from the 17th century. At the end of the village stands the monastery with the church of the Holy Cross from the 15th century. On the southern side of the island, among the houses, empty plots can be seen toward the western, wooded part.
The ensemble is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code RST-0987-1977.
