Remains of the Church of St John, Sali

In the village of Sali, in Zadar County, the remains of the Church of St John, dating from the 9th century, have been preserved. It is interesting as an example of early church architecture on the islands of the Zadar archipelago.

The church is single-nave, with an elongated plan and a semicircular apse that projects outward. Along the side walls run two blind arches that carried the vault, and two pilasters each divide the space into three bays. It is built of stone dressed in courses, and the walls are from 0.80 to 3.10 m high. It was probably built on Roman ruins and was once part of a smaller monastery, which in a charter of 1064 is mentioned as Cella sancti Iohannis in Tilago.

A protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-2380.
