The Badanj hillfort rises above the road between Tribalj and Crikvenica, in the area of the Municipality of Vinodol in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. It is interesting to visitors attracted by medieval fortifications and the history of the limes.
Its plan is oval, and it is protected by two rings of walls. Of the whole complex, the tower with a cistern has been well preserved, built of dressed rubble in courses. The hillfort received its first phase in the 4th century, when the Liburnian limes was being strengthened, and it served as a lookout beside the road between Tarsatica and Senia. Between the 6th and 8th centuries it was enlarged, and later it became a military and political seat, a župa town. It lost its importance in the 13th century and was abandoned, and the earthquake of 1321 destroyed it. A special feature is the well-preserved latrine niches in the eastern part of the wall walk, which show that many people lived in this refuge.
The hillfort is a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code RRI-0405-1976.
