Archaeological Site Ad Basilicas Pictas, Split

In Split, in Split-Dalmatia County, lies the archaeological site of Ad basilicas pictas, an important place of ancient, early Christian and medieval life. It is interesting to visitors because three layers of history can be read in one space.

Investigations showed three building phases. The oldest, from the 1st and 2nd centuries, left the remains of a building with a circular plan. In the 5th and 6th centuries two churches and a baptistery were built, and this is the oldest baptistery discovered so far on the Split peninsula. The third phase is a medieval cemetery used beside one of the early Christian churches. In written sources this church is named as the Church of St Andrew, also called the "painted" one, and in 1185 a church synod was held in it.

A protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-4541.
