Ancient Harbour in Špinut Cove, Split

Špinut Cove lies on the north side of the Marjan peninsula in Split, and beneath its calm sea and shore an ancient harbour lies hidden. It is of interest to visitors who want to learn how coastal infrastructure was built in Roman times, far from Split's well-known squares.

Investigations uncovered the remains of a coastal construction that was used from the 2nd century BC to the 4th century AD. It is a complex structure made of reused amphorae, a stone embankment and wooden piles, beams, planks, stakes and brushwood. A masonry stone structure discovered by chance shows that ancient remains also extend along the land part of the cove. It is assumed that a coastal farm building with harbour installations and auxiliary buildings stood here.

The site is a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-4576.
