The cave site near the Castle of St George is located in the municipality of Brtonigla, in Istria County. It is interesting because in a single underground cavity it records a thousand-year sequence of human occupation, from the Eneolithic to the early Middle Ages.
The cave has two larger oval spaces joined by a narrower, low passage, and the entrance faces south. It is 35 to 40 m long and up to 6 m high. The stratigraphy is partly untouched. The lower layer, which is undamaged, belongs to the Bronze Age, while in the damaged upper layer ceramic finds from the Eneolithic, the Bronze Age, late antiquity and the Middle Ages were recorded. This suggests that the cave was used for a long time, and probably at least occasionally in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages as well.
The site is a protected cultural property and is entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-599.
