Bibinje lies six kilometres from Zadar, on a natural small peninsula by the sea. The place is of interest to those who want to see what a rural settlement built as a refuge from Ottoman attacks looks like, with a dense cluster of houses and a street network unusually regular for a village.
Medieval documents mention it as Bibanum, and from the beginning of the 16th century Male (Little) and Velike (Great) Bibinje can be distinguished on the peninsula. When the population abandoned Stomorine on the hill of Petrina, Bibinje took in the refugees and strengthened itself with walls. The houses are mostly two-storey buildings with stone facades and gabled roofs, unfortunately clumsily altered in places in the 20th century. At the entrance to the core a small kastelić (small castle) has survived, which is today part of an old oil mill. Two churches stand in the core: the old parish church of St Roch the Confessor and the Church of St John.
The ensemble is a protected cultural property, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-2991.
