Church of St George, Pražnica

The church of St George, in documents connected with Straževnik, is located near Pražnica. It is interesting as one of the oldest recorded churches of this area.

It is first mentioned in a charter from 1111. It is a single-nave building with a semicircular apse and a barrel vault with transverse ribs, and on the side walls are blind niches. The door with a pointed arch is decorated with acanthus. Above the façade is a masonry bell gable, which is counted among the oldest in Dalmatia. Such a bell gable, a masonry bell support instead of a tower, is a frequent feature of the little churches here, and this is one of the earliest examples.

The church is a protected cultural good and is entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-4779.
