Church of St Nicholas of the Mountain, Svirče

The church of St Nicholas of the Mountain is located on the highest peak of the island of Hvar, which descends steeply to the sea on the south side of the island. Access is demanding, and the reward is the view and a quiet little church.

The rectangular building of roughly dressed stone has a gabled roof of stone slabs and a barrel vault. A porch was later added to the older building; during the renovation at the end of the 20th century both received a common wooden gabled roof. On a simple stone altar stands a restored statue of St Nicholas. The church is linked with the name of Matija Ivanić: some historians recognise in him the leader of the popular uprising, others his grandfather.

The church is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-4947.
