In the centre of Split, on the northeast side of the People's Square (Narodni trg), also known as Pjaca, stands the Karepić Palace. Its entrance opens onto a small square called Iza lože, and it is of interest to visitors who like to trace the layers of construction: Gothic is interwoven here with Renaissance, just a few metres from the lively city square.
The noble Karepić family originates from Trogir and moved to Split at the end of the 13th or the beginning of the 14th century. On the north façade you can still recognise traces of an older Romanesque house: a door with a segmental arch, a small square window and a Gothic family coat of arms. The palace received its present festive appearance in 1564, when canon and vicar Ivan Karepić had it enlarged and remodelled in the Renaissance spirit. His undertaking is attested by an inscription carved in classical lettering beneath the coat of arms on the south façade. In the 16th century the palace was taken over by the Gorizi family, and it is still lived in today, while the ground floor is commercial space.
The monument is a protected cultural good and is entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-5654.
