The Cathedral of St Mark rises on the main square of the town of Korčula and is a recognisable symbol of the entire town. Its powerful stone volume and tall bell tower define the appearance of the island's historic core, and experts count it among the finest cathedral achievements of the Croatian coast.
The building is Gothic-Renaissance, raised on the plan of a Romanesque basilican concept. The main nave is separated from the side ones by powerful monolithic columns with richly decorated capitals. In the south aisle they were made in the 15th century by Korčula masters, and one is close to the manner of Juraj Dalmatinac. The portal, with Romanesque-Gothic features, is the work of the late Gothic master Bonino of Milan from 1412. The tall stone bell tower was built in layers: the ground floor has Romanesque features, and the upper floors Gothic and Renaissance ones. At the top is a large terrace with a loggia and a richly shaped octagonal dome and lantern, the stonework of the Korčula master Marko Andrijić from 1481.
The cathedral is a protected cultural property and is entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-4920.
