The Church of St Francis of Assisi with the Franciscan monastery is located in Zagreb, near Kaptol. It is a monument complex whose history spans the period from the 13th to the 20th century, so it clearly shows how the city was built and rebuilt.
The church is a single-nave hall building with an elongated preaching sanctuary and a bell tower, and was built from about 1255 to 1264. It was restored between 1607 and 1620, after the fire of 1645 and after the earthquake of 1880. At that time, in works from 1885 to 1902 to designs by H. Bollé, it was re-Gothicised and received its present appearance. The rebuilding of the Gothic monastery began in 1656. The south and west wings and the corridor in the north wing were completed in 1669, and the street wing towards Kaptol in 1697. The exterior of the monastery retained its original late Renaissance appearance. The Chapel of St Francis inside the monastery was built in 1683. Its vault stuccoes are regarded as the finest work of Mannerism in continental Croatia.
The complex is a protected cultural property and is entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-209.
