Marjan is a peninsula on the western edge of Split, and as a protected cultural landscape it is of interest to anyone in the city looking for a walk far from the crowds of the historic core. It lies in Split-Dalmatia County, within the boundaries of the city of Split.
Traces of several periods have accumulated in the relatively narrow area of the peninsula. There are prehistoric, ancient and medieval archaeological remains, parts of a rural landscape, small medieval and Renaissance churches, and an extensive Jewish cemetery. The landscape is also shaped by a forest of Aleppo pine, created by afforestation from the end of the 19th century until the Second World War. In addition, there are Secession and modernist buildings, and stairways, promenades and viewpoints allow residents and guests to explore the whole area easily. It is precisely this layering of monuments that is Marjan's greatest value.
The peninsula is a protected cultural property and is entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-6401. Within the protected area, individually protected buildings include, among others, the churches of St George, St Nicholas, St Jerome and Our Lady of Seven Sorrows, the Jewish Cemetery, the Meteorological Station building, the Secession buildings in the Zoo, and the building of the Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries.
