Kostanić's Tombstone – Drvenik

Drvenik can boast a historical monument of exceptional beauty and certainly an interesting story. Kostanić's Tombstone is a tall stećak made in the mid-15th century. It depicts two horsemen and a girl between them, elaborated in folkloric fashion as a fight between a Turk and a local young man, Kostanić (a local surname), for the girl's favour. In this fight Kostanić is killed. The very story that preceded the erection of this tombstone is a Croatian version of Romeo and Juliet. The monument is interesting, with an interesting story, and certainly a valuable depiction of a historical moment that unfolded in this place.

Today you can enjoy the beauty of the stećak, and travel back to the time of its creation. This is the best way to experience, at least in part, moments from the 15th century, as they were experienced by the inhabitants of the surrounding places.
