The islet of St. Mark belongs to the municipality of Omišalj, in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. Here a visitor encounters the remains of a fortified Byzantine stronghold on a small island, along with traces of Benedictine ownership.
On the citadel of the islet a Byzantine kastron from the 6th century has been identified. The perimeter of the rampart, reinforced with curved buttresses, is partly preserved, along with a late antique cistern and the remains of the church of St. John Chrysostom. North of the kastron, traces of early medieval architecture have been noted. The continuity of life on the islet is also confirmed through the Middle Ages, when it belonged to the Benedictine abbey of St. Nicholas. In this way the Byzantine, early medieval and monastic periods can be followed in a small space.
The zone is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-2734.
