Historic Urban Ensemble of Omišalj

Omišalj is a settlement on the northwestern coast of the island of Krk, in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County. Built on a steep rise above a deep bay, it offers views of the sea and the densely packed houses of the old core.

People have lived here since prehistory, since the hillfort settlement at the top. In antiquity a town developed at the foot, and in the Middle Ages the compact settlement grew around the Frankopan castle. The buildings are mostly rural in appearance, with the occasional Romanesque or Gothic detail. During the 19th and 20th centuries the medieval fabric was adorned with townhouses in Neoclassical and Art Nouveau styles. Especially valuable is the parish church of St. Mary, a Romanesque basilica that was raised and enlarged in the 15th and 16th centuries.

The ensemble is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-2006.
