Voznik Quarry with Stećci, Brotnice

South of the village of Brotnice in northwestern Konavle, in Dubrovnik-Neretva County, on the slopes of the Osojnik hill at the Voznik site, are the remains of a quarry with stećci. It is interesting because here one can see the whole path of a stećak, from the extraction of the stone to the cemetery it was intended for, in the period from the 14th to the 16th century.

The quarry is about 80 x 100 m, with many traces of stone extraction and discarded cracked blocks and crushed stone. Half-finished stećci that broke during working stand out, especially a chest with a relief of a horseman, arcades and a kolo dance of nine human figures. This find proves that the final working was done in the quarry itself, and not at the place of installation. Beside the nearby church of St. Luke is a medieval cemetery with stećci which, according to research so far, were made right here. The connection between the place of production and the destination makes the ensemble unique.
