Nakovanj is a place on a plateau sheltered by hills, at the far west of the Pelješac peninsula, between Lovište and Viganj, in the municipality of Orebić in Dubrovnik-Neretva County. It is of interest to visitors who want to get to know an abandoned livestock-herding area far from the coast.
From the 14th century it belonged to Trstenica, an administrative unit of the Republic of Dubrovnik. In the Middle Ages the two present hamlets formed, Gornja and Donja Nakovana, settlements of herders with rustic stone houses covered with stone slabs. The preserved stani were temporary herders' dwellings built in dry stone. Between the hamlets stands the church of Our Lady the Lesser, and documents also mention a church of St. Michael. Today the area is abandoned and has lost its significance because life has moved to the sea coast.
The area is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-1423.
