Punat is a settlement in the municipality of Punat, in Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, on the east of the Bay of Punat. Through its area one can follow a development from ancient country estates to 20th-century summer residences.
In antiquity this area had rich country-estate and economic complexes, and south of today's center there was a medieval village. The present settlement around Stara plaća began to develop gradually in the 16th and 17th centuries. The parish church of the Holy Trinity from the 18th century was enlarged in the 19th century and between the two wars. In the 19th century typologically uniform rows of houses appear, with vaulted spaces and balatura, which formed around the church of Sts. Roch and Sebastian built in 1855. In the 20th century summer residences with landscaped gardens were built, and the Kanajt area has preserved the organization of a cultivated landscape of olive groves and dry-stone walls.
The ensemble is a protected cultural good, entered in the Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia under the code Z-7150.
Data: Register of Cultural Goods of the Republic of Croatia (Ministry of Culture and Media), Open Licence; coordinates: DGU (centre of the settlement).
